Vacation Eats: San Francisco and a Rustic Ranch Wedding

Pacific Coast Highway 1

Wedding season is in full swing, and love is in the air.  We just returned from visiting Northern California and attending our second wedding of last week. Yep, two in one week on opposite sides of the country! The bride in wedding numero dos was my college roommate and one of the very first friends I made at USC. Coming from Hawaii, I found LA to be frenetic and overwhelming and was seriously homesick, but this Georgia peach of a gal was a burst of sunshine--warm, silly and unceasingly positive. She encouraged me to explore the city and embrace my new life...but held my hand the whole time.

The wedding took place at the groom's family's ranch in Northern California, about two and a half hours north of San Francisco. Our flight into SFO landed at 8:00AM, which meant one thing: breakfast time!

Our drive north led us through the Mission District, over the Golden Gate Bridge and along the scenic Shoreline Highway 1, a winding, cliff-hugging route with truly stunning views of the ocean. Despite being exhausted from our 4:45AM wake up call, I couldn't stand to nap and miss the sights. I highly recommend that everyone take this drive at least once in their life!

We bunked at the quaint Seacliff on the Bluff Motel in Gualala. While the decor was a tad outdated, it (surprisingly) wasn't the grandma-inspired duvet that I was obsessing over; it was the oceanfront view from our room. We could even hear the waves rolling onto the shore. Sheer bliss! Nothing soothes this island girl like the ocean. In addition, the room was spotless, and there was a jacuzzi tub and fireplace.

A grove of oak trees with Spanish moss, Douglas Firs and Manzanitas served as the ceremony site, and the reception was held in a tent nearby. Every last detail was romantic, rustic, and Pinterest-perfect.

The next day, we gathered for a farewell brunch at the groom's family's barn, which had been transformed with lights strung overhead and boxes containing photos of the couple lining the walls.

After filling up on bacon, parfaits and the most ooey, gooey chorizo chilaquiles, we said our goodbyes and headed back down to San Francisco to visit with friends and, of course, check a few more boxes off our to-eat list.
