World Fare

It's a bus! It's a restaurant! It's a...bustaurant!

The recently launched World Fare-- helmed by former Corporate Executive Sous Chef for the Michael Mina Group Andi Van Willigen-- literally takes mobile meals to the next level. Operating out of a converted double decker bus, World Fare takes orders and cooks on the first level and offers a place to eat on the second, open level. This nom-ing area with counters and umbrellas is a stroke of sheer brilliance, providing a much better option than awkwardly standing around or eating in your car as with food trucks.

World Fare's menu staple is bunny chow, which is a South African street food consisting of hollowed out bread loaves filled with curry. Thanks to Chef Andi, the bus offers four kinds of bunny chow plus daily specials. The bustaurant also serves sides, desserts and homemade drinks.

With its international dishes and communal dining area, World Fare hopes to "create moments, connections and inspired interactions through food." How lovely is that?

For my and J's St. Patty's day lunch (and his birthday lunch!), we ordered the short rib bunny chow ($4.00), the corned beef bunny chow special ($4.00), truffle mac and cheese balls ($2.50) and the strawberry basil lemonade ($2.00).

Rarely ever does the adjective "cute" apply to food, but it seems fitting here. Just look at them!

The short rib bunny chow was perfection. The meat was incredibly juicy and tender and had a wonderfully sweet flavor. I'm still thinking about this one!

The corned beef bunny chow was also good, but the coleslaw topping was mindblowing. It rivaled J's great Aunt Blanche's coleslaw, which is saying a lot. Now, if only they'll give me the recipe...

As a macaroni and cheese lover, I was very excited for the truffle mac and cheese balls. The crunchy outer layer plays nicely off the soft, creamy mac and cheese inside and, although the flavor wasn't what I expected, I really enjoyed these.

Finally, the strawberry basil lemonade was friggin' incredible. I slurped it down and was ready to buy a second one...but was out of cash. This is a must-drink.

The World Fare crew is incredibly friendly and passionate about the bustaraunt's fare. They love food, and they love people, and it shows. Can't wait to go back!

UPDATE (3/19):

I went back. This time, I ordered the Original Bunny Chow (chicken curry, coconut milk, cashews, chickpeas and cilantro), the Orange lavender tea, Butterscotch bread pudding and Red velvet cheesecake.

Verdict: Still awesome.

  1. I had ZERO expectations from the mac&cheese balls, and they were fantastic. Possibly the best $2 spent on fried food so far in 2010. Glad you enjoyed it.

Prices seem to be fluctuating upwards, which may be a concern as a typical lunch of 2 bunnies + a drink hovers over $10.
